The Modern Gal’s Black Friday

The Modern Gal’s Black Friday Posted on November 29, 200810 Comments
Well, The Modern Mom and I did our Black Friday shopping today. I didn’t buy a lot, a couple of gifts and one REALLY BIG THING for myself:

Yes, that’s right my friends. After mulling over it for a few weeks, I decided to go with the MacBook over a new Dell, HP or other laptop. I waited until today in hopes of getting a small discount. It was small, about $100, but I did get a discount on the MacBook and a little bit more off some of the software I bought.
Do I love it? Not yet. It’s confusing as hell (why does my “keychain” keep telling me I’m putting in the wrong password?). I still absolutely hate Apple as a company and it KILLS me that I’m yielding to it. I hated when I told the clerk at the Apple Store that I was considering making the jump, he smugly said “ohhhh, you’re a PC user.” I hate that Apple’s definition of a discount was $100.
But, pretty much nine out of ten of everyone I polled — and I polled a lot of people — recommended the Mac over the PC. I know the Mac will likely last longer (although Apple will be sure to make my version uncool in about two years). I know I like how light the machine is and how sleek the screen is. And, I’ve been told that the Mac will become more intuitive once I figure the damn thing out.
The clerk at the Apple Store today when I bought the machine (different one from the smug guy) told me to be patient, that it would take some getting used to but once I did, I’d love it. I appreciated that. Then he said “Welcome to the Apple family” and slapped a sticker on the box that said “Lucky You.”

  1. Hey, I didn’t get a “Lucky You” sticker! And yes, welcome to the family. I will get easier over time and there are plenty of people eager to help with questions. Congrats on a great gift to yourself!

  2. Im glad you have a new laptop. But I am very dissapointed you bought an apple product. You’ve changed, it used to be about the music man.

  3. Congrats on the new computer! I remember that keychain thing being annoying at first too — but I haven’t really seen it since, so that’s good. Once you get a chance to play with things you’re familiar with, it’ll be a smooth transition. (If my mother and grandmother could do it, then I know you can!)

  4. Yay for a new MacBook! Once you get used to it, you will adore it. It definitely took me a bit to get used to, but now we’re a two MacBook household. And we may or may not also have my old iBook still hanging around!

  5. Buy the year of one on one classes for $100. Its so worth it. You can take up to one session per week and you get to choose the topic. We did a “PC to Mac transition” class first off and it really helped. Good luck!

  6. You are probably never going to find a good discount on MACs on the upside they have a very high resale value if you choose to upgrade in a couple years, unlike PCs which seem to retain zero value.

We only spent $60 but managed to get all Christmas shopping done and we have $30 in rebates to send in. Not bad for one day of shopping!

  7. Yay you! You’ll love the Mac. It’s an adjustment but you’ll love it. Also, the Mac packaging is awesome. It totally builds to the excitement of opening of the computer up.

  8. You’re a new Mac user!! Congrats!

I’m a PCer myself. I’ve worked with Macs twice in the past. They were okay. They’re all cute and compact!

  9. What a bunch of self-righteous a-holes.

    That’s marketing, I guess.

Congrats on the new machine, though. You are now cooler than me, officially. You were anyway, but it was unofficial until now.
