Get psyched about a new musical mission

Get psyched about a new musical mission Posted on June 22, 200917 Comments

A good weekend (which I may or may not tell you about … I can’t decide) and a good message at Mass on Sunday night made me ready to put the whole moping thing behind me, at least for now. I woke up this morning feeling more refreshed than I have in a couple weeks and ready to kick ass at life again.

Usually my iPod and my life are very much in sync: it’s very good at playing music that suits my mood or current situation. But it don’t think it got the memo this morning that we were kicking ass.

So, in hopes of keeping this renewed spirit alive, I present to you the newest Modern Gal musical mission …

Last summer I just needed some new music to listen to and it resulted in the megahit Modern Gal Rocks album. This summer, my friends, we are going to put together a Modern Gal Gets Psyched mix, a la Barney Stinson to help fight those times when life tries to sneak a banana peel in my path.

Here’s how it works: Think of the song that gets you most psyched about living life and suggest it to me in a comment on this post. Please suggest ONLY ONE SONG. If you suggest more than one, I’m just going to use the first one you give me. I want the mix to be representative of all my Modern Friends, not just a bunch of picks from one person.

After about a week or so, I’ll put together the playlist, review it and probably add the playlist iTunes so that anyone who wants to download it can. (I may also give away a copy or two if it’s exceptionally good.)

Bonus points go to people who suggest music I’ve never heard before. Also, when in doubt, ’80s music is very, very good.

  1. When I need a real pick me up, energy boost kind of a song I always go to La La Land by Green Velvet.

  2. When I need a pick me up I def turn to "Hard to Beat' by Hard Fi. It reminds me of the first kick ass commercial edit I directed but also because I associate it with being strong and independent. In fact I need to go hear it again!

  3. oh man. just one…this is hard. Grace Kelly by Minka is just fun and you can't help but kinda bop your head around when you hear it.

***sidenote, i would have picked Billy Joel but it's impossible for me to pick one single Billy Joel song that makes me happy. his music is dead sexy.

  4. Help I'm Alive by Metric

It's impossible to listen to without shaking something. :p

  5. For me, easy! Rooftops by Lost Prophets. It makes me feel like I have to live life to the fullest, right now. I love that song!

  6. Just one? Too! Difficult!

OK, I'll go with "Love, Ire & Song" by Frank Turner. I get bonus points because I'm pretty sure you've not heard of him, and the song makes me want to stage a revolution.

  7. Lately: Oxford Comma by Vampire Weekend. I do not even like Vampire Weekend but this song is just so happy and cute.

  8. "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi. This song gets me so fired up whenever I hear it! Bon Jovi is the best!

  9. I veto my previous suggestion, and substitute "Big Country" by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. It's hard to listen to and not feel uplifted.

  10. "love today" by MiKA – omg amazing. So upbeat, and happy and it just makes me want to bust a move. If you need the mp3? I'll send it to you.
