Who’s going to see SATC2?

Who’s going to see SATC2? Posted on May 27, 201012 Comments

Um, not me. I know, I’m probably letting some of you down. But I just can’t do it.

I’ve said this before here, but I wanted the writers to leave the ending with the TV series and not screw up Big’s coming around with a movie, especially one where he leaves her at the altar (briefly). Yet, in the name of loyalty I went to see the first movie on opening night and found it mediocre at best.

No more.

I’ve watched the previews and read every plot summary and review that my eyes have come across in the past week, and all I can say is I’m embarrassed for the Sex and the City franchise.

The TV series was groundbreaking in the way it portrayed single 30-something women. It was smart and thought-provoking and managed to survive the groan-worthy puns Carrie occasionally unleashed and the unreality of a designer shoe-obssessed newspaper columnist (and not one for any of the big three NYC papers) being able to financially survive. It was smart enough that I know plenty of dudes who got into watching the occasional episode, even if they were slow to admit it.

SATC2 appears to take the worst of the TV series — the unrealities and the puns — and plays them up while forgetting what made the series so good. I loved how the characters in the series were able to grow through the changes in their lives without the show losing its edge. Now it just seems the characters have had plenty of changes in their lives but no growth. And in this day and age, they’re neither breaking any new ground nor representative of how the world/economy has changed in the past few years. And BTW, Stanford and Anthony are such polar opposites and hated each other so much in the series I’m not sure there’s anything this movie can do to convince me they’d be getting married now.

‘But it’s like visiting old friends,’ someone said on my Facebook wall when I declared I was skipping SATC2. I have six seasons of DVDs if I need to visit old friends. The disc with ‘The Agony and the Ex-tacy’ episode is ready to go in my DVD player for whenever I need a dose of SATC.

Maybe I’m overanalyzing here, but I just can’t bring myself to spend the $10 (or however much the going rate is these days) to see what I know will disappoint me. I know I’m probably in the minority here of SATC fans, and I won’t judge you if you do decide to go see the movie. In fact, if you do, report back here and tell me if I’m totally off base. But, if you’re on the fence post, I’d encourage you to skip the movie too. Because the last thing we need is Michael Patrick King mulling a THIRD Sex and the City movie.

And in the mean time, here’s a slightly unfair but also kind of funny mockery of SATC2 done in 60 seconds …

  1. I hear ya — I have a feeling it will be as atrocious as Bridget Jones 2 (which is one of the worst movies I've ever seen). In other news, I'm really excited to see "Eat Pray Love" the movie.

  2. I read the Live Blogging on Jezebel of SATC2. Yeah, I'm kinda happy I decided to skip it too. I even had free tickets, but it felt like such a waste of time.

Looks (reads?) as if I were right. I would have been wholly disappointed. And annoyed.

  3. When I saw the preview with Aidan and the implication that something happens between them, I was out.

  4. there's always netflix though no?

i hear what you're saying and completely agree but i know i'll probably go see it when the hype dies down (like…july) and people aren't still getting dressed up to go see it. Seriously the way girls dressed to go see the first movie made me feel like such a slob in jeans and a nice shirt! Un. Necessary.

  5. I have seen the first movie and plan to see the second (on cheap matinee) but I would rather enjoy the DVDs and show more. That was what I really loved, not the films.

  6. I totally agree with your assessment of the show and the first movie. I'll see SATC2, but really only because I have to see something to review for the magazine I freelance for, and I don't particularly want to see Prince of Persia.

But yeah, the first movie managed to take everything smart and funny about the show and make it contrived and banal. It's really just a vehicle for high-end product placement.

And Aiden? PLEASE. His story line is SO done. It took me a while to like Carrie again after that whole thing; I may not recover this time.

  7. I wasn't an avid SATC watcher for odd reasons, but I agree. I wasn't overly thrilled with the first movie. It seemed so off-base, like so many people said at the end of the series, "what would have happened if…" and the writers were all, "Oh, okay, we'll put that into a movie!" And now this? It just seems silly. And Carrie has now moved to the dark side with an HP? Whatever.

  8. I agree with you here. I'm a SATC fan as well – but of the DVD's. The first movie just made Carrie seem so dependent – I mean, really, we've all gone back to an ex once or twice, but Big really screwed her over. And she went back. For a single, almost 30-something gal like me, this is not hopeful, but pathetic. I'll stick to my DVD set and my fav episode, "The Good Fight."

  9. I can buy the Stanford-Anthony matchup, because polar opposites end up loving each other in the end. That's why they don't get along at first…haven't you heard of "opposites attract"? Eventually, they start to grow on each other, and end up together (not all of the time). Stanford and Anthony are like fire and ice, but they had something, and it's apparently come out (no pun intended).

  10. With all due respect, my experience with opposites attract has been very bad, but yes, I've heard of it.

  11. I'm seeing it tomorrow for a girls night thing, but I completely agree with you! These films are really just cash cows.

  12. well…i actually saw the movie of my own free will, and while it's certainly no Oscar-winner, i thought it was ridiculously fun. yes, the storyline is quite dumb and yes, the clothing is even more WTF than it ever was on the tv show. but there were some hot naked men in it, and it was a fun escape for a couple of hours on a saturday afternoon with a friend.

there were lots of places where everyone in the theater (only 1 man in the whole place, btw) was laughing, and the Stanford/Anthony wedding at the beginning is so over-the-top that it practically seems…normal. the one thing i absolutely could not stand was Samantha and her storyline, but then i never liked her on the show, either.

i'd say it's at least worth a rental if you're ever in the mood for some mindless fluff!
