Pop culture, circa 2010ish

Pop culture, circa 2010ish Posted on January 29, 20118 Comments

I spent some time writing this post about a month ago but hadn’t quite finished it when life stepped on my foot. Now that I’m caught up on things, I figured a month late is as good a time to post it as any.

I don’t know why I always feel the urge to do a year-end list marking all the pop culture I took part in for the year. I guess it will help in a few years when I need to look back and quiz myself on release dates for trivia contests and such. I know it’s not because I’m a pop culture elitist. I don’t expect anyone to read my lists and think any more highly of my tastes.

Anyway, here we go.

SONGS I LISTENED TO IN 2010 … apparently I did not listen to too many new songs in the past year
1. The Mystery Zone by Spoon. This must have been released in January 2010 because I feel like it’s been in my life forever, and that’s a good thing.
2. Valentino by Diane Birch. So catchy.
3. Tightrope by Janelle Monae. Cannot keep from dancing anytime I hear this.
4. Tighten Up by The Black Keys. I’m sorry it took so long to get into you, Black Keys.
5. Whip My Hair by Willow Smith (Seriously, I’m not tired of this)
6. F*ck You by Cee-Lo. F*ck yeah!
7. Bed Intruder Song by Antoine Dodson and Auto-Tune the News (Seriously, I’m not tired of this either)

MOVIES AND TV I WATCHED IN 2010 … because I do most of my movie watching at home, I don’t watch a lot of new releases; so here are movies released in the past two years that I watched in the past year
1. Inglourious Basterds. Epic if not a little graphic.
2. Toy Story 3. Let’s only trust Pixar with sequels from now on, k?
3. Glee. I’m finally through the first season. Music, dancing, making fun of itself? Perfect combo.
4. How I Met Your Mother. This season has been WAY better than the last.
5. Easy A. Emma Stone rocks my face off.
6. Julie and Julia. For once I was not upset with how a movie deviated from its book. Side note: I saw a lot of Stanley Tucci in 2010, which was a plus.
7. Up in the Air. Thought-provoking.
8. Away We Go. Really adorable.
9. Iron Man 2. Brainless fun.
10. Up. I really did not like Up the way I wanted to like Up. I don’t know why.

BOOKS I READ IN 2010
1. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. I know it’s been around for a while but I hadn’t gotten to it. Very, very good and very, very well-written.
2. Stay by Allie Larkin. I could not put this book down.
3. The Committment: Love, Sex, Marriage and My Family by Dan Savage.
4. Julie and Julia by Julie Powell. I’d been meaning to read it for like four years. I happened to love both the book and the movie.
5. The Devil Wears Prada. Also had been on my shelf a while. Sometimes my company can feel like Runway.
6. The Dark Wind by Tony Hillerman. He’s a favorite of mine in the mystery genre, and may he RIP.
7. Infamous Scribblers by Eric Burns. It needed a better editor.
8. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I wanted to like this book, and I liked the first couple of chapters. The more I read, the more I hated the book.

  1. I’ll have to check out your music choices because I’d not heard of most of them. Except for “F*ck You,” because that awesomeness is universal.

  2. Yay! We saw and listened to a lot of the same things! I loved Away We Go too. So sweet and my man was super hot in it, even with insane facial hair.

    1. πŸ™‚ I also got around to seeing Devil Wears Prada this year. I think that was my least favorite of his roles. Favorite was a toss up between Easy A and Julie and Julia — he was adorable in both.

  3. Well I love Stanley Tucci, too, but I don’t think that makes us soulmates.

I still haven’t heard this Willow Smith deal. I have a knack for unintentionally avoiding whatever the big thing at the moment is. I keep hearing all about it without having ever heard the song. Everybody seems to like it, anyway.

  4. Thank you! The Happiness Project was lame. I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t like it. How is Dan Savage’s book? I LOVE how he writes and wondered how *gently putting* “normal” this might be (being not a fan of marriage or children). JUST curious… πŸ™‚

I used to post every week what I was listening to, drinking and reading… I think I need to re-add that feature to my blog. Hey, you get anything during this last major snowstorm that’s seemingly hit EVERYBODY?

    1. Dan Savage’s book is good. I don’t read Savage Love regularly, but the book seems just a smidge tamer than that. I think it’s readable whether you’re for marriage or not, but the whole thing is half about him and his partner debating whether they’re going to have a wedding and half about all the arguments for/against marriage both of the heterosexual and gay variety. So I would say you need an interest in those arguments if you’re going to read it.

We actually got spared the snowtastrophe, and instead were blessed with 60 degrees on Sunday. It’s the first time all winter one of the crazy storms has missed us. Did you get anything in Pittsburgh?
