If I could turn back time

If I could turn back time Posted on May 26, 20117 Comments

I think I started consuming vast quantities of music videos during middle school. Not coincidentally, it was around that time that I really, really, really wanted to be a music video director when I grew up. I remember my mind being blown by the premier of the Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Tonight, Tonight‘ video. (I mean, come on, that video was pretty epic).

But good thing I didn’t pursue music video direction as a career, because no one shows music videos anymore, amirite? Certainly not MTV, MTVs 2-10 or VH1.

BUT WAIT!! As it turns out, VH1 WILL start showing some videos again in the fall in the form of Pop-Up Video. Be still my heart, I was obsessed with that show. To a future music video director, it gave me all kinds of behind-the scenes revelations about how videos were made. As a budding smart-ass, it gave me all kinds of ideas on how to be snarky.

In celebration of the impending return of Pop-Up Video and the fact that today is my Friday (I’m off to Memphis tonight to be at the mercy of the Modern Mom and her to-do list for a few days as we try to wrap up the wedding arrangements), here are a few old Pop-Up Videos to waste your time …

(if you’re reading this on Google Reader, now is the appropriate time to click on through to the actual post)

Oh the innuendo in Cher’s ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’

I was so relieved when I learned what word was used to dub ‘joint’ in Tom Petty’s ‘You Don’t Know How it Feels’

This song was a big-time favorite of mine in middle school. Oh the preteen hormones. (The pop-up video for ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ is actually better, but I can’t find it).

You know how I’m so obsessed with choreographed dancing? This video is a big reason why. I know quite a bit of the choreography here.

Here’s some more pop-up goodness to waste your time.
Ha ha, ok, seriously: more here.

  1. Oh man, I miss music videos. I remember TLC’s Waterfalls was really spectacular. And I always loved Elton John’s Believe. Now I’m going to have to do a blog on my favorite videos.

  2. I loved pop-up videos! They were the best.

Good luck with the final wedding preparations with the Modern Mom! Have a blast!!

  3. I freakin’ loved that show! And with MTV and VH1 now on Hulu, maybe I’ll be able to catch some episodes.

And yes, MUSIC VIDEOS… we used to RECORD them to VHS to watch over-and-over again. For some reason, I remember “No Son of Mine” being a household favorite.

  4. One of my friends tweeted about the return on Pop Up Video the other day and I nearly squealed with joy, sitting right here at my desk at work. Yay!
