My day of win

My day of win Posted on May 24, 20127 Comments

The following three things happened to me yesterday:

1. A book I put a hold on at the library became available. Not a huge deal, but it’s always nice — especially when you just finish up something else you were reading, as I just did.

2a. A backstory: I started wearing a lot more dry-cleaner only clothing when I started the new job, and I switched to a new dry cleaner that was on the way to the new office. Quick in, quick out. On my second visit, the cleaners lost my favorite sweater. I’ve never heard of that happening. They think it went to the wrong person. I stopped by the cleaners yesterday to see if my sweater, which I got off the clearance rack at the J. Crew Outlet in Colorado in January, had turned up. It hadn’t. They gave me a refund.

2b. The Modern Mom, who is vacationing in Destin, Fla., right now, texted me to say she was at the J. Crew Outlet there, and was there anything that I wanted? Anything you want to buy me, I told her. Oh, and would you believe the dry cleaner lost that sweater I bought when we were at the outlet in January?, I added. A few minutes later I got another text from the MM, this time a photo. Of the sweater in all its woolen rust-and-navy rugby striped glory and in the correct size. What are the odds?

3. When I got home from work and picking my library book up, there was a box on the table where the Modern Love Machine leaves my mail. That’s funny, I thought, all the things I’ve ordered lately have already arrived. When I got closer, I saw the J. Crew logo.** And then I saw someone had written ‘moved’ on it.

Holy shit. It was the iPad case.

I was extremely surprised that my mom happened to find a match for the missing sweater this late in the game, but I absolutely positively could not believe that the iPad case found its way to me. I had counted it for dead. Back it goes for a refund, and my mistake no longer has an $80 pricetag.

I feel like I should have bought a lottery ticket, but I guess I shouldn’t press my luck too much.

**Clearly I have a J. Crew problem.

  1. Feel free to send some of that cosmic good luck my way. (Also, I love when the book I want is finally available at the library. It just makes me feel all warm and happy inside.)
