Here’s a little secret … when the first holiday commercial popped on TV a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t complain about it being obscenely early for Christmas commercials like I usually would. I was happy to see it.
I’m really, really, really looking forward to this holiday season — and I hope by doing so I’m not putting some insane pressure on the holidays to be really effing awesome. I’m just looking forward to the holiday cheer that comes with the decorations and music, I’m looking forward to spending some legitimate time with family and friends and I’m looking forward to a slightly slower pace at work that (hopefully, so help me God) will come by Christmas Eve.
Side note: When I was taking down the skeleton I’d hung on the front door for Halloween, the Modern Love Machine asked if we had Christmas lights. DO WE HAVE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS?? I laughed at him. Clearly he does not know me as well as he thinks he does. I’m already plotting how I’m going to incorporate more lights into what I’ve already got now that I have a nice large basement to store them all. And KG, if you’re reading this, I’m trying to convince him that an inflatable display is a REALLY GOOD IDEA.
This is only a portion of the lights we have.
I felt kind of cheated out of a good Christmas last year. I did so much traveling beforehand that I never really got much into the Christmas spirit. I didn’t even get a tree, which is completely, utterly unheard of for me. Even when I was broke as a joke my first year out of college, I sprung for a tree and some trimmings to go with. I don’t even remember Christmas itself.
I’ll probably be almost as busy this year, but with less traveling so that will help. This will be the first time the Modern Love Machine and I split the holidays between our families — we’re going to his parents for Thanksgiving and mine for Christmas. I’m not nearly as stressed about that as I thought I might be, so that’s good. I’ve been really homesick for Memphis lately, but I might actually get to spend more than a few days there in December, so keep your fingers crossed.
Until then, here’s a photo of the inside of Nashville’s Opryland Hotel when it’s decked out with it’s cajillion holiday lights. Opryland is reopening TODAY after being closed since the floods in May that devastated Nashville. I hear they went ahead and put up the lights a little early this year.
I so look forward to the holidays every year (and returning to TN for 2.5 glorious weeks!). I took Scott to the Opryland Hotel last year for the first time–I’ll never tire of those lights (though $25 to park just to go in and see the lights is highway robbery).
Really good idea? Great, awesome, amazing idea!
A lot of people put up lights in our neighborhood this weekend, which does seem early, but the weather was nice this weekend and that doesn’t happen often in November here.
i can’t get passed “the modern love machine” without laughing.
!!!
Bah!
I love Christmas too, but I refuse to acknowledge its existence until after Thanksgiving. But then — bring on the cheesy decorations!
I’ve been lucky enough to see the Opryland Hotel decorated for the holidays, and it is absolutely breathtaking in person! In fact, I had myself all worked up for the day that I might ever get married, it would be RIGHT THERE.
Such the amazing place that can slyly attempt to talk me into nuptials. Pseh.
