Lessons in trendiness Posted on March 26, 20082 Comments

My Real Simple weekly e-mail made some good points in exercising caution while building one’s wardrobe — something the Modern Gal should probably pay attention to. I’m definitely guilty of falling for emerging trends, going out and buying several items to fit those trends and then donating the clothes a few months later after wearing them only a couple times, having rediscovered the lesson that just because something is trendy doesn’t mean it’s going to look or feel good on me.

Check out their tips here.

My own personal Modern Gal tip: If you find yourself hankering for a trend, go after the cheaper Target version. It used to take trends a good year, it seemed, to make it to the discount retailers, but that definitely isn’t the case anymore. You feel a lot less guilty getting rid of a $20 Target item after a few wears than getting rid of an $80 (or more) item from a boutique store. “Invest” instead in classic pieces that never go out of style.

  1. I am there with you. I have done lots of what was I thinking…. I think it is more important to define a gal’s own style and dress accordingly instead of letting fashion run your wardrobe. Talk about saving too….
