Early-morning workout observations

I’ve been mildly successful in my three-week quest to get up before work (read: I’m not a morning person) to head to the gym. In mildly successful, I mean I’ve done it maybe four or five times, but in my defense I’ve been out of town quite a bit and worked several night shifts.

My observations thus far:

  • It’s not easy to get up before the sun, which I don’t think I’ve done on a regular basis since high school. Granted, it’s getting a little better now that the days are getting longer, but still. Dark=asleep. Light=awake.
  • You know the joke “did you get dressed in the dark this morning?” Yup, there’s that too.
  • These sheets make it really freakin’ hard to get out of bed.
  • Whenever I get out of bed, the Modern Dog immediately responds: WALK!, WALK!, WALK?!?, which I deny her until after I get home from the gym. She usually wakes up the Modern Beau in the process.
  • There is always a old naked lady in the locker room in the mornings. Sometimes two.
  • Regardless of how much of a pain in the ass it is to get to the gym, I’m always very happy once I get there.

  1. Dude, we were talking about this at Weight Watcher’s on Saturday: The hardest part of exercise isn’t exercise. It’s actually getting up from the sofa. Or the bed. Or whatever. And I couldn’t agree more. I love it while I’m doing it; I feel great after. But some how, my silly little atrophied brain refuses to acknowledge that when it’s actually time to leave the house and work out. Silly psyches.

    Anyway, go you!

  2. What time you getting up for these workouts? I usually rise at 5:45 since the gym opens at 6.

  3. Yup, I’ve been getting up before work for a while now. It can be a killer, but so worth it. Thank goodness I don’t have to walk a dog, but my cat is very persistent about being fed before I pee.

  4. What is it about being old that leads you to stand around completely naked in the locker room? I guess we’ll find out some day . . .

  5. You should try Yoga. It isn’t as much of a jolt to your system in the mornings. I do yoga in the mornings and if I am going to do cardio or weights, then I do that after work hours. Just a though, congrats on the exercise in general though.

  6. It is a little easier now that the it’s not pitch dark out when I get up. I set two alarms. The second one I call my “no seriously get the hell out of bed” alarm. Sometimes I turn it off hehe but I try to resist.

    Noodles: It’s always good to know I’m not the crazy one 🙂

    Emma: The alarm has been going off at 6, with me hitting the snooze once or twice. My gym is open at 5:30, but I just can’t fathom being there that early.

    Noelle: I’m not going to lie, your swimming inspired me.

    Mickey: Thanks for passing that along. I’m in Nashvegas right now, so I couldn’t make boot camp on Thursday, but I am intrigued by it.

    Allie: I KNOW, FOR REAL.

    Dustin: Yoga and Pilates both are a part of my repertoire, though I’m at the mercy of my gym as to when I can take them. I do practice a bit of yoga at home though.

    KG: I like the idea of the “no seriously get the hell out of bed” alarm. I use one of those when I have to catch a very early flight.
