I’ve had two people message me off blog asking me how much I paid for my alterations. Perhaps I overreacted a bit since the average guess was $157.29, and the alteration came in significantly lower than that at $81. I will say this: The detailing that was shown on the straps of the dress in the picture doesn’t actually exist on my dress. It’s just one piece of fabric, therefore needing only the seam to be separated, trimmed and reattached.
But I’m judging from some of y’all’s responses that this is still a smidge overpriced, yes? I guess next time I’ll ask before I alter.
I’ve posted individual responses to all of your comments from yesterday in the original post, if you’re interested. Thanks for all the modern love. I feel some David Bowie coming on.
Well that seems completely reasonable, in the way that a $600 blouse at Neiman Marcus seems affordable when it’s 50% off, and still $170 more than I would ever pay for a blouse.
My guess was very close!
I should really start saving for the wedding in 2010. Maybe I could convince her to post-pone? They’ve only been engaged for almost 3 years already… more time can’t hurt!
I love that song!
I agree with Noelle. It’s not like it’s unreasonable in some contexts, but in the context of a dress you will wear once, it’s out of line. To spend 81 bucks to get a coat altered when you are going to wear it all winter, every winter for several years — that would make sense.
I’d charge you more than $81 for the job. Assuming I could sew.
$81 seems pretty steep, but I guess that depends on how badly you want to wear a certain dress.
