Walk it out Posted on May 15, 20087 Comments

I’ve been playing around today with this website called Walk Score. It’s mission is to give you a sense of how walkable a community is. You put in an address and it assesses a score based on how dense the streets are and how many restaurants, services, park spaces, schools, etc. are in a one-mile radius.

It’s not perfect, and the site admits that. It can’t tell where there are greenways and walking paths or if the neighborhood has a safety issue, but from all the addresses I’ve tested, it seems to have a pretty good sense of what’s walkable.

My area scored a 80 out of 100 for a “very walkable” rating, which I can verify — I’m a walking hound and I give my new neighborhood an A++ for its walkability. How walkable is your ‘hood?

  1. Yeah, I do not live in a walkable area. Score of 43. I’m very jealous of your neighborhood!

  2. Mine was a 40. I’m jealous too! This would be a great tool for someone who’s moving and comparing neighborhoods.

  3. Y’all are welcome to come visit!

Allie: That’s sort of how I found it. I was looking around on some real estate sites.

  4. I’m going to try it out, I’m guessing I score low. I’d love to live someplace walkable again like NYC.

  5. We got an 88. I did noticed that they weren’t as up to date on closing and openings in regards to new businesses and that places right next to each other would have different distance quotas. But regardless, a great site and will probably pass it around. Thanks. Also, don’t forget that we have a very good friend and honest real estate agent in Knoxville if you are in need.

  6. The only thing that’s walkable in my ‘hood is an ice cream shop, which is fantastic. And the drive-in movie theatre, but there’s not much point in walking there.

    Love the new look!
