What do Denny’s, a wigshop, free food and a dude selling pornographic comments and tarot readings all have in common? They all converged on Friday night for a Knoxville blogger meeting at the city’s First Friday event.

First Friday is one of the cooler things that happens in our fair city — galleries, artists and local stores keep their doors open late on the first Friday of each month to show off their wares and, best of all, they serve free snacky food and beverages.

It was my first time to go, and I was invited to meet up with Courtney from Malfeasance, Mickey from The Prettiest Denny’s Waitress, Em from the Used Toy Emporium, Stan from The Sunsphere is not a Wigshop and a few other friends of Em’s and Stan’s. Let me tell you, they’re all soooo overrated. No, I can’t lie. They’re really awesome folks, just as you would expect from keeping up with them in the blog world. I hate that they had to find out that The Modern Gal really isn’t as cool in person. I do hope they look past this flaw and invite me out again, though.

Among the exciting discoveries were one of my favorite local photographers, Jen Simpson. Check out her Etsy shop here. Also, as described in Mickey’s latest post: “a dude in a bookstore with a fake British accent who was selling his pornographic comics and doing tarot readings for $10. It was a fun evening.” That dude kept telling us how much he loved how we were dressed, so I guess he had a thing for fashion too.

P.S. I also had a lovely lunch with Jigsha at Chai at Six this week. My real life and bloggy life have collided!

  1. How fun to meet the bloggy friends in real life! First Friday sounds awesome too.

  2. I agree with vanessa. How fun!! That event looks like its totally up my alley too. Cheers to a fabulous weekend for you. I took your advice and spent some time outside and then went out to lunch with friends πŸ™‚

  3. I suggest that you plan on coming to Memphis for the last Friday of one of these summer months. The last Friday of each month is Trolley Night, where trolley fair is free along South Main and Madison and all the furniture show rooms, art galleries, boutiques, cafes, and the like stay open late and provide complimentary wine for your enjoyment. The area has also been infiltrated with street musicians which provide a certain ambiance that is very much appreciated. It is an amazing time and heart felt among the Civil Rights Museum that plays as the backdrop. With your love of Memphis, I know that you would love to see this alternative side to the city. Also, the Memphis Flyer has been running articles on influential Memphis bloggers, I will try to find you the info. Does the Metro Pulse do the same, I wasn’t sure. Anyway, sounds like a great time and I can’t wait to meet some of my bloggy friends!

  4. Don’t be ridiculous, you are SUPER COOL. At least I thought so. We need to do it again sometime!

I was hoping you’d wear your strapless blue dress, long nails, fingerless fishnet gloves, and 40s hair, though. I was a bit disappointed that you didn’t.

  5. Vanessa: When you come visit, we can all hang out πŸ™‚

K: Ditto and I’m glad you had a nice low-key weekend!

Dustin: I’m hoping to make it to Memphis in July, so I’ll try to coincide it with that. It sounds awesome.

Courtney: Thanks! I decided not to bust out the corset and fishnet gloves this time around. I didn’t want to scare anyone. Maybe next time though.

  6. Uh oh, my secret is out now. Y’all can just keep thinking that I dress like a 40s pinup girl.

  7. It was cool to hang out with you and the MB. So illustrious! (Really, sorry for inadvertently giving you the same adjective as ICW- completely unintentional. Sharp observation on your part, though!)
