The ever-so-green Allie has a great post on things she won’t give up for the sake of being green. I thought it was a great post, so I’m tagging myself to do one as well.
- Especially soft toilet paper. I tried the Seventh Generation kind one time (I love their paper towels) and was horrified at how much it felt like sandpaper on my bum. Allie says I probably tried the one-ply kind and suggests the two-ply version which I will try if I can find it. In the mean time, I’m sticking with my extra-thick Quilted Northern Ultra. Speaking of paper towels, I might have a hard time giving those up too.
- Shopping for the sake of shopping. Hi, I’m The Modern Gal and I have a problem. I like to shop. And not just for stuff I need. I like to ogle at clothes I don’t need and homewares I don’t need and sometimes even food I don’t need. And sometimes I buy some of that stuff. The good news is I’m doing my best to reduce my consumptionist ways and to be smarter about what I’m buying. I’m heeding advice from a book Allie shared with me, Big Green Purse, on how to throw my money behind responsible, green products and companies.
- Newspapers and magazines. Newspapers are a necessity in my job — I have to read them. I read as many as I can online, but I always read the local print editions. And I’m a huge fan of magazines. I read one nearly every day, and don’t get the same enjoyment from trying to read them online. I do recycle them though.
- Travel. I love to travel. I usually do some long-distance traveling twice a year and several more short road trips. It’s one of my favorite hobbies, and I cannot fathom giving up. Isn’t it important to see the world we’re trying to save?
What is it that you can’t fathom to give up to go green?
Until they come up with vegetarian buffalo wings that taste just as good as the real thing, I won’t give up meat.
I feel you on the travel thing, but I do try to use public transportation if possible, whatever city I’m in. I am also a crazy shopaholic but I am trying to get better. I’m hoping to make a full-month commitment to not buying unnecessary items. But not until summer is over, of course.
I really couldn’t give up travel either.. or shopping for the sake of shopping. Definitely two necessities of life.
I love shopping, but I hate buying. It kind of works out.
Also, I’m not a fan of the quited TP. I hate changing the roll, so I’m quite content with the thin stuff.
Hi, and thanks for the shout out about my Big Green Purse book. Love the rest of the comments; looks like everyone’s trying to take at least some action to make a difference. Thanks again.
Herman: That’s a good one. I’d have a very hard time giving up meat too.
NPW: Me too. I wish my city had good public transportation or that I lived in a city with good public transportation. I could give up my car for all in-town usage then.
Playful Professional: Agreed.
Noelle: I need to learn to hate buying. How does that work?
Diane: Thanks for stopping by! I love the book and hope more people read it.
Seventh Generation is my favorite TP. But then I can’t stand ultra soft TP. Gives me the shivers.
I probably won’t be giving up traveling because the grass always seems to be greener, damnit.
I can’t give up my soft as silk toilet paper or cheese. I feel bad that the cheese comes in plastic packaging, but seriously, it’s cheese! I can’t give that up!
Great list!
We don’t travel much, but it’s probably not something I’m willing to give up completely either.
