I’ve noticed through blogs and Twitter that a lot of people had a rough September. Sick family members, money problems, work problems, etc. I know I was excited as crap to get September over with so I could start anew with October.
While observing this morning that the leaves on the trees around my condo somehow skipped the colorful stage and went straight to the ground, I mulled about what I could do to make sure October isn’t nearly as bad as September. That’s when it hit me: Rocktoberfest.
From here to forever more, Roctoberfest will be a monthlong celebration aimed at knocking the socks off of October and preventing it from kicking our asses like September did. Sure, bad things may happen this month, but we’re going to do as much as we can to counter those bad things and say to the world, “Hey world, we Rock!”**
To participate, I ask you to make a Rocktoberfest pledge or two either in the comment section here or in a post on your own blog. A Rocktoberfest pledge is kind of like a New Year’s Resolution, but it should be more fun. I’m not recommending anyone pledge to lose weight, but if that will make you Rock October, than go for it. Make as many or as few as you like.
Some suggestions:
1. Participate in RA and Operation Pink Herring’s Mission: Put Together, an aim to wear things that are “intentional and cohesive, but not necessarily trendy or expensive.” Do some shopping in your own closet. Put together some new outfits out of your old stuff, and feel good when you wear them. You can Rock October in style!
2. Drink more pumpkin-laced beverages. Pumpkin is the official veggie of October, and the adult beverage and coffee companies of the world do a great job of letting us know that with their Pumpkin Ales and Pumpkin Lattes. Drinking more beer and coffee probably makes anyone more fun.
Here are my Rocktoberfest pledges:
1. Find balance. The theme of September for the Modern Gal was work, work, work in an attempt to back my bosses off my rear. The result? The bosses have backed off a bit, but now work consumes nearly every waking thought I have. I still pledge to work hard this month, but I’m going to try to be more efficient so I can have more fun and be less stressed away from work.
2. Discover a new musical album on my own. Instead of asking for new music suggestions from friends, I’m going to mine the radio stations and myspace pages until I find the perfect band with the perfect new album. Hopefully I’ll find some other good stuff along the way. New music is fun, right?
So, what do you pledge to do in celebration of Rocktoberfest?
**I’d like to make a Rocktoberfest badge for everyone to sport on their blogs, but my only copy of Photoshop is located on my five-year-old, about-to-commit-suicide laptop. I can try firing it up sometime in the next few days, but if any of you creative type are interested in putting together a Rocktoberfest badge, I would love you forever and ever and ever (and you would truly be living out the spirit of Roctoberfest).
September did indeed blow hard so sign me up for Rocktoberfest. My pledges:
1) Read for pleasure. I used to be a big reader and have let that slide in my increasingly manic state.
2) Make an actual effort to be enthusiastic and positive…and not get mad about politics.
3) Try meditating again.
4) Take the time to write the stuff I want to write.
5) Dress the cat up for Halloween.
I think No. 5 might actually give me the greatest joy of all. 🙂
Rocktober is an awesome idea, Modern Gal. Mind if I pass it along on The Park Bench?
1. Finally tackle the pile of books I’ve been wanting to read.
2. Get outside more often before it gets really cold!
Love this idea
Great idea! You know me — it’s Baracktoberfest in my mind.
Here are my goals:
1) Canvas in New Hampshire at least once before the election.
2) Phonebank once a week.
3) Meet some political and politically like-minded people in my new neighborhood and make some new friends.
Just started reading your blog. This sounded like such a good idea, I couldn’t pass it up.
I posted mine on my blog http://blogpressure.typepad.com/blog_pressure/
Rock on!
As I mentioned in the post today, I’m going to be more thrifty this month, with the exception of anything pumpkin flavored that I can find.
I like the idea of Roctoberfest 🙂
I hope to find my desire to learn once again so I can enjoy school this month and not feel like I’m being suffocated by my classes.
Are you doing M: PT too??? Yay!
I love your ideas!!
I would like to stick to my running plan
1. Have a fabulous 25th birthday!
2. Visit a pumpkin patch and buy some local produce and mums.
3. Take some gorgeous photography of this year’s foliage, maybe take a day trip ride upstate.
4.Make you a Rocktoberfest badge…I’ll take a stab at it 😉
Love it! Am plugging it on my blog right now!
Glad to know other out there love October – and love the phrase “Rocktoberfest!”
Hmm.. I doubt they’ll execute, but here is my list of what I’d like to happen:
– leave work on time so I can attempt to socialize after work.
– cook some and maybe finally orchestra a social gathering.
– drink beer (or hot chocolate) around a bonfire and contemplate the serious and insane.
oh i’m so rocking this mantra for the month. i need to rock it right to the gym!!!
Isn’t the Brewers’ Jam this month. That’s how I plan to rock-tober: Imbibing irresponsibly.
Rock on!
In your email is a badge. Thoughts?
Happy Rocktoberfest!
– I’m going to start (and finish) a new Web project.
– And spend some time snuggling with the cat and not online. Because she’s been very nice lately, it’s snuggle weather and I spend way too much time online.
Love this! I’m going to think about my focus for October and I’ll get back to you, or more likely, put it up on my own blog. Great idea!
Finally got around to doing this! Great idea!
