I’m a firm believer that modern gals should be able to handle the basic kind of home repair and maintenance jobs that are often labeled as a man’s work by our society. All you need is a brain and access to the right tools and equipment and a little bit of confidence, and all of those things are accessible.
You can find the knowledge you need for most any project in home-repair books at the library or the local hardware store. You can find plenty of stuff online too, and BeJane.com is my new favorite place. It’s got instructions and tips for tons of projects, listing exactly what tools and supplies you need and giving step-by-step instructions and videos to help. There are forums to post your questions, features on modern gals who have tackled all kinds of projects and newsletters all with a Rosie the Riveter can-do attitude.
Don’t have a stash of power tools? I think every woman should have the basics like a simple tool kit and an electric drill. But did you know that many Home Depot stores rent just about every tool under the sun? (I’m not sure about Lowe’s) I’ve used this service before and never run into a problem with it.
Do you have any suggestions of modern gal-friendly sites for home maintenance and repair?
(Cheers to Skirt Magazine)
I love BeJane! That’s a great site!
OH dude! I think I skipped and shrieked with joy when my dad got me a power drill. It's one of my indespensible tools, along with my electric screw driver. (Which, btw, MGs, if you don't own one, run — don't walk — to the Black & Decker section of your local hardware store.
I have a hot pink tool kit.
That is all.
I don’t have any site recommendations. I learned everything I know from my dad – and I feel sorry for every MG out there that didn’t have someone to teach them the good stuff growing up. How to drywall, how to fix any plumbing problem, how to change a light fixture or electrical socket… every person should know these things.
Oh, and yes, every person should have at least (AT LEAST!) a power drill.
Now I’m off to check out bejane!
