Back in business Posted on December 2, 20089 Comments

I heard something recently about a report that found that happy people are able to focus on the big picture of life while unhappy people are plagued by tunnel vision. Boy, don’t I know it.

For the past three months I’ve been bogged down in an assignment at work to end all assignments. Among all the assignments I’ve had handed to me in my almost six years of being a career gal, this one was in the top two. Possibly the top one, but I won’t know that ’til I have a chance to reflect. Some day I’ll tell you about it.

But in the meantime, I’m proud to say that it’s more or less complete. There will be a little bit of fall out to deal with in the coming weeks, and the end of that project likely will mean new ones will appear, but for the most part, I’m getting a bit of my life back that’s been missing in the last few months … exactly what I’ve been moaning and groaning about so much.

And now that I have my life back, I can’t stop planning what I want to do with it. Consider the following things I’ve added to my to-do list.

  • Get back to running on an almost daily basis so I can participate in the Jingle Bell 5K (and actually run).
  • Travel to Memphis this weekend to see The Modern Beau run his first marathon.
  • Get eight hours of sleep a night and get to work at a much more reasonable hour each day.
  • Eat better and get back on the Weight Watchers track.
  • Transfer all the old files from my craptastic laptop to my new, shiny, runs like a charm laptop.*
  • Decorate for Christmas.
  • Finish and send my Christmas cards early.
  • Finish my Christmas shopping soon.
  • Locate my Barenaked Ladies’ Barenaked for the Holidays album and other Christmas albums I cannot find (which will probably require me actually tackling the Great CD Reorganization of 2008 0r 09 sooner rather than later — details to follow).
  • Trim the two-foot tall stack of old, unread magazines on my floor in half, which means reading them.

I better get busy, huh?

*Speaking of shiny MacBooks, the Simpsons made fun of Apple on Sunday and I totally dug it:

  1. I love how secretive you are about your big work project. Lemme guess–you were in charge of choosing UT’s new football coach, weren’t you.

  2. That’s ambitious.

And thanks for the heads-up on the 5K. I’ve been wanting to do one soon. Did you notice on the website that they have an option where you can pay $25 to “Sleep in for arthritis”?

Good luck to the MB. I’ve dialed back my own desire to run a marathon lately. He has my respect even for just trying.

  3. Ha, I love The Simpsons.

Good luck with your list. I’m still so busy I don’t even have time to make a list.

  4. That was a great clip! And best of luck with all the running to you and yours this holiday season.

  5. My dad and I had a conversation yesterday about my tunnel vision, and it’s so true. I need to look at the bigger picture!

  6. Candy: That’s exactly what I was doing. Did you like my decision? (I don’t say what it is b/c I’m trying to keep my nosy bosses from finding my blog).

    Dutchess: Go now. It’s urgent.

Mickey: I’m trying to pretend the sleep in option isn’t there, because I’d so rather do that than run. The MB, by the way, is crazy.

Heidi: I merely saw the internet clip, not the whole ep.

Courtney: It’s not unlike me to write “make a list about (fill in blank)” on one of my many lists. I’m a list whore.

    Noelle: Gracias.

Playful Pro: It’s hard. I found myself getting bogged down with my unhappiness earlier today, just a day after I was so happy-go-lucky big-picture focusing.

  7. That sounds like a great list. I need to get off my a** and begin training for my 5K. I really don’t want to fall behind on that.
