Save your veggies!

Save your veggies! Posted on June 3, 20085 Comments

For Mickey, who wants more food and baseball. Apparently he’s tired of reading about Sex and the City. I don’t know what’s wrong with him.

I have a problem when it comes to summer fruit and veggie season. My eyes are always far bigger than my stomach when I hit the farmer’s market or local produce stand. I see all the beautiful squash, corn, tomatoes, peaches and okra and just get more, more, MORE! And of course most of it ends up spoiling because I just can’t seem to consume it all fast enough.

Tiny Choices has a list she got from her CSA a few years ago on how to properly store all those scrumptious goodies so as to get the longest shelf life out of them. I’ve already printed out my own copy. (What’s a CSA? Read here).

Thanks to Allie for originally pointing out the post and apologies to Mickey if you’ve heard this one already.

  1. Wow,those are some great tips. I once tried the Boston Organics, where they deliver fresh produce to you weekly, but it was WAY too much for Chris and I to consume before it went bad, even with the smallest amount possible. Farmer’s Markets are a much better (and more fun!) option.

  2. That list is a lifesaver, isn’t it? I always expect produce to last much longer than it does.

  3. Awesome tips. Thanks for the advice. If you need some easy recipes or some ways to prep for storage, let me know. It has turned into a hobby of mine that was just realized in the past couple of weeks. Thanks again.

  4. No apologies necessary. I’m having the same problem since all kinds of produce are finally in season and it’s all fruits and veggies, all the time around here.
