Songs for leaving Nashville

Songs for leaving Nashville Posted on June 10, 20088 Comments

I spent Sunday afternoon downloading all of your suggestions for my new musical collection. I’m pretty impressed by the suggestions, but I’m going to take the next week and a half to digest them and will give you my official review of each song when I get back from D.C.

For those of you who suggested more than one song, I took only your first suggestion as the rule was one song only. I did that so that I’d get a distinct variety of music. Your efforts above and beyond were not wasted though as I’ve filed away the rest of your suggestions to download the next time I get on iTunes.

In the meantime, Em asked for three of my own musical choices. I’ll do better than that, Em. Here’s a mixed CD I had started putting together when I was still living in Nashville but forgot to burn. It’s a mix of stuff I love from different genres and eras. About half of it I discovered during my time in Nashville, the others were old loves just to balance it out a bit. None of it is country music — I did discover country music while in the country music capital, but the country music I came away loving can be summed up in two words: Brad Paisley.

Anyway, my Leaving Nashville CD:

1. Let Me Go – Cake
2. Ain’t No Other Man – Christina Aguilera
3. Candelight – Imogen Heap
4. Der Kommisar – After the Fire
5. Fidelity – Regina Spektor
6. Burning Love – Elvis
7. Cathedrals – Jump Little Children
8. New Shoes – Paolo Nutini
9. Ordinary People – John Legend
10. One of These Things First – Nick Drake
11. Coconut – Harry Nilsson
12. Jackson – Johnny & June Carter Cash
13. Say it Right – Nelly Furtado
14. Buddy Holly – Weezer
15. In the Waiting Line – Zero 7
16. The Old Apartment – Barenaked Ladies
17. La Isla Bonita – Madonna
18. True Love Ways – Buddy Holly

I realize you may know most of these songs already, but I hope you find something new among them. If you’re interested in your own copy, I’ll be happy to send one to you if you send your address to themoderngal(at)gmail(dot)com. Just don’t expect it until you receive word that I’ve located my stash of blank CDs in unpacking at my new place.

  1. I actually told my boss yesterday that before I die, I have to meet Brad Paisley. And if I see him out to a nice Sunday dinner with Kim and Huck, I will be “that girl”. I’m sorry. You can’t be that cute and expect me just to look from afar.

  2. That’s a good list. I think I am gonna have to make a copy for myself. A little MG playlist to have on the I-pod.

You are up on music, what are you talking about.

Can’t wait to see what you have to say about the new music selections. I am way to excited about this?!?

  3. Em: Let me know what you think of the ones you don’t know.

Angie: And when that happens I better be the first to know.

Dustin: Thanks, but truthfully the new music on this album is pretty much the only new music I know. I will say my first impressions of the new music are good.

  4. Your collection is off unless it includes “You Must Be From Nashville,” by Smokin Dave and the Premo Dopes (who are actually from Knoxville).

  5. That’s quite a mix. Is there a unifying theme that I’m missing? That’s okay; we don’t need one.

  6. MTH: I’ll include your suggestion on my reader-generated collecton.

Mickey: Unifying theme: Stuff I listened to on repeat while living in Nashville. And you could have worse songs in your head.
