Break for breakfast

Break for breakfast Posted on September 26, 20088 Comments

I’m sure you’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives you energy to think during the morning and keeps you from overloading on calories later in the day.

All my life I’ve been stuck in the same breakfast routine: cereal and milk, though I’ve added coffee in recent years to that. I tend to eat the same kind of cereal for months and months and months in a row until one day I just decide to change to another kind, which I’ll get stuck on for months and months and months. Exciting, right? I do make an exception every so often if someone wants to cook me breakfast or take me to IHOP, Waffle House, McDonalds or brunch.

Actually, it’s served me well because my current cereal selection (actually, I’ve been on this one for probably two years now) is Kashi Puffs, which are so high in fiber and low on calories that it, combined with the coffee, is worth only three Weight Watchers points.

Anyway, I think I probably need some variety, and Real Simple has some great suggestions for fast, nutritious breakfasts.

  1. Hmm. I’m hoping this will give me some ideas because I don’t think the coffee alone is cutting it. And also, probably my idea of just switching to Lo-carb Monster in the mornings is not a great one.

  2. When I started boot camp, I got into the habit of making great, healthy breakfasts. I loved coming home and sitting down to hot coffee and scrambled egg whites with veggies. I was never a breakfast eater before boot camp. Now I swear by breakfast, but it’s usually a yogurt or banana that I take with me to the office.

I do love this treat: Fiber one yogurt with a serving of grape nuts.

  3. Low points are always great.

I’ve been a cereal person but now I’m stuck on vanilla yogurt and granola for breakfast.

  4. I’ve been eating frosted shredded wheat (mixed with the unfrosted kind to cut down on sugar) for several years now, usually with strawberries or blueberries. Sometimes I’ll have raisin bran or non-instant oatmeal to break the monotony, but the shredded wheat just seems to stick with me longer. Plus it’s not as full of air as other cereals, so I feel like I’m getting more for my dollar.

Oh, and I mix organic milk with organic soy milk just to give the cows a little break.

  5. I’ve been told that you lose weight faster if you don’t have the same thing everyday for breakfast – not entirely sure if it works yet but it definitely makes for nicer mornings!

  6. I’m an eggs and oatmeal person myself. It takes a little longer than cereal, but I walk out of my apartment feeling stuffed for very few calories. Not to mention it keep the hunger at bay for a little longer.

  7. grab some light and fit vanilla yogurt, kashi go lean crunch and throw in some frozen or fresh berries or bananas. To freaking die for.

  8. I really like eating non-breakfast food for breakfast. I don’t know why, but last night’s leftovers always seem more appealing to me than cereal.
