I discovered something my sophomore year in college with a roommate who often stayed up late to study while I was more interested in beauty sleep: When you can’t have an absolutely dark bedroom, you’re going to have a hard time falling and staying asleep.

So that year I bought a sleep mask, a Nick and Nora mask with clouds on it that matched my extra-long twin comforter. It got me through many nights of college. It also got me through nights of living with The Modern Beau when he would stay up late getting cozy with his law textbooks.

When I moved into my current condo, I discovered that a street light shines directly into my bedroom. The blinds hardly block the light, and I’ve been way too lazy to hang my light-blocking curtains, which aren’t big enough to cover the whole window anyway. Of course my old-school sleep mask got lost somewhere in the depths of the MB’s messy bachelor-style bedroom, though it’s since been found.

In the mean time I went searching for a new one and found a great seller on Etsy. Honey Sugar Boutique does some great sleep masks, handbags and wallets in fun, vibrant fabrics. I settled on the mask below, and I love it. It’s got thick, soft flannel on the inside so it’s soft against my face and completely blocks the light, unlike my old mask. It’s also got two straps … anyone who uses a sleep mask knows that it’s nearly impossible to keep it on all night long. The extra strap has done just that though.

So stop by Honey Sugar Boutique and check out the wares.

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I too can’t sleep without my beloved sleep mask and my darling puppy just chewed through the elastic (again). This is just what I’m looking for!

  2. My story is exactly the same as yours- roommate stayed up too late, helped when I lived with the BF, now keeps the darn security lights out of my eyes.

If you ever find yourself in a pinch for a sleep mask (like how I always manage to lose mine at a hotel), try Bed Bath and Beyond. They carry a really comfy dark blue one with stars on it.

  3. I have the same problem in my new place, down to the laziness about curtains and all.

I recently got a sleep mask at a hotel (instead of a mint, very clever!) but I kind of hate it. The light totally seeps its way underneath and I wake up in the middle of the night feeling like someone’s suffocating my face. (I heat up like a nuclear reactor when I sleep.)

I think I need to look into putting up those curtains.

  4. That is seriously adorable. I think if I wore a sleep mask I’d never get out of bed. The light is what tells me it’s time to get going.

  5. Thank you so much for posting this. I just lost my sleeping mask, not that it was so great anyway, but I’m such a light sleeper that I need extra help any way I can get it. I will definitely be check this out.

  6. Oh that is a cute mask. I need to have absolute darkness now when I sleep with some natural light coming in. I used to sleep with some light but now I can’t.

  7. Anything to make me look like Nora, I’m all for!!

    These are lovely.

I used to need absolute darkness for sleep hence some lovely shades but now I can zonk at in a blink.
