Hats off to Aretha Posted on January 20, 200912 Comments

I hadn’t really gotten excited about the inauguration until I turned on the TV this morning to see the inaugural motorcade plowing through the streets of Washington with throngs of Americans cheering and waving flags. It didn’t take long for me to be wrapped up in it.

I don’t care who you’re for, an inauguration is a very moving event. The pomp and circumstance, the speeches, the music, the cheers. And it’s always good to get a fresh start, regardless of who the previous president was.

But in the midst of all this talk about change and hope, there was one thing that inspired The Modern Gal more than anything else:

ARETHA, WHERE DO I GET ME ONE OF THOSE??

And to honor my favorite Queen of Soul, who was in the house today to sing ‘My Country ‘Tis of Thee,’ here’s a video that encompasses so many of the things which I love: choreographed dancing, soul music and the Blues Brothers.

  1. Not only the hat, but the earrings, and the coat up to the neck, and the make-up—-that was an ensemble. An ensemble! A lot of thought went into that. Andprobably a lot of money—more than I will see in a long, long while.

Props to Aretha for carrying it off!

  2. If you look up “workin’ it” in the dictionary, I’m bettin’ you’ll see a picture of Aretha.

  3. I was worried about her opening up those pipes in the freezing cold. She’s a pro, though, and her instrument didn’t waver.

  4. There are very few people in the world with the stature to carry off that hat. Thank goodness that hat was given a moment in the sun, because it was awesome.
