The great purgeathon of 2009

The great purgeathon of 2009 Posted on May 18, 20099 Comments

For one of my New Year’s resolutions I pledged to simplify my life in 2009. It was something I’ve been meaning to do since I moved into my house in June — get rid of the junk I’ve been lugging from house to house that I never, ever, ever think about except for when I’m moving it. My resolutions got put on a hold a bit when I found myself reeling from a breakup, but now that that’s more or less out of the way it’s time to focus on them again — especially since I’m about to be faced with moving again.

Moving again? I know you’re all like, ‘whaaaaaaat??’ More on that later.

I worked on my closet Friday and started systematically trying on EVERY SINGLE PIECE of clothing that was in there (I made it about two-thirds of the way around before I became exhausted). I thought hard about every item: when did I last wear this? does it fit properly? do I have anything to wear it with? do I even want to wear it? If the item did not pass all of those questions it went into the Goodwill pile, and let’s just say the Goodwill pile is rather wieldy right now. But even just getting through two-thirds of the closet, I felt incredibly lighter looking at what was left hanging.

I plan to do this with every nook and cranny in my house over the next month or two.

Anyway, my point was to mention this article, which offers advice on when to keep things, give them away, try to sell them or just toss them. I’m sure most of it’s common sense, but I think just reading it gets me even more fired up to purge, purge, purge.

  1. thank you for the link!

I am also trying to purge. we just really don’t need all this STUFF, you know? for instance, I have three closets plus storage bins for off season items.

    is this needed? absolutely not.

  2. I keep throwing stuff I don’t want anymore in the basement. The second I turn my manuscript in, it’s all going away. I can’t wait to get rid of it. I hate clutter!

  3. You’ve inspired me to purge. I want to have a yard sale in the next month or so, because we have to move at the end of July. Sucks. I need to coax Gentry into purging some of his clothes. He’s a secret clothes horse.

  4. i do this at least twice/year – any clothes that i don’t wear during the season if i’ve had them more than a year get tossed/ebayed 🙂

    it’s so therapeutic isn’t it?

  5. Thanks for reminding me that I really need to purge. I mean really bad. You should see my apartment. Wonder how much I can purge before my move on Saturday…

  6. Oh well I do wish that I was near you…I would take that pile of Goodwill in a second 🙂

  7. I so need to purge from my apartment. As much as I don’t want to move, I almost hope I do so I can start unloading stuff from my apartment.

  8. I love getting rid of stuff. I’m pretty good about keeping only the stuff I use on a regular basis, but sometimes even that can get a bit unwieldy. As you well know, from helping me move this weekend. 🙂

  9. I’ve been purging too lately. It feels so goood to get rid of things I no longer use, what doesn’t fit, etc. Hmmm, must be spring…
