Hurts so good Posted on June 16, 20096 Comments

I just finished a 15-minute run and feel like my joints are going to snap in two at any second. 15 lousy minutes of running!! That ain’t supposed to be anything these days to me.

To be fair, I woke up with that tender sore kind of feeling after an intense but not overbearing workout. The ‘hurt so good’ kind of soreness. I enjoy that kind of soreness. The problem is that soreness got much, much worse as I sat on my butt all day at work, and by the time I left work I could barely lug my computer out to the car.

All of this caused by a 10-mile bike ride I took yesterday on my swanky new road bike in anticipating for the triathlon that I’m still planning to complete on Aug. 8. The swanky new bike was bought not specifically for the triathlon, but it’s sure makes triathlon training a lot exciting. It’s been a long time since I’ve ridden a bike that moves forward when peddled, and let me tell you it’s just as exhilarating as it was as a kid. This particular bike has such a smooth ride that I accidentally rode 10 miles without much noticing I rode 15 minutes longer than my triathlon training program recommended.

Thank goodness the training only called for a 15-minute run tonight. This week is what it calls a rest week, despite the rest week involving activity for five out of the seven days.

Still, I’m love, love, loving training for this triathlon. I really can’t put my finger on why. Runner’s high? Perhaps. Certainly throwing a bike and swim routine in with the usual running makes working out a whole lot more interesting. It may just be the thrill of completing each step of the training program, knowing I’m one step closer to this race. I imagine it also helps that I can eat whatever I dang well please while doing all this activity, within reason, of course.

My mom has already promised to come witness this triathlon, which I’m very excited about. I’ve already mentally planned the pedicures and ginormous fajita lunch w/ beer that we will be getting after the race.

I’d also considered doing a massage after the race. But considering the current state of my body, that may get bumped up to, oh, this weekend.

  1. Your triathlon training is so awesome. You'll be ready to kick some butt by Aug. 8.

I hate how sitting can make your muscles tighter. If I work out in the morning, I feel like I should be stretching the rest of the day to keep my muscles from tightening up. Such a pain.

And yeah, go get that massage. Whatever keeps you motivated.

  2. I ran my first 10K last month and I'm going to sign up for a biathalon, it's a 12 mile bike ride and a 5K at the end of August.

Just invest in good shoes. I think I'm going to need to buy another pair in 2 months already.

  3. OMG you amaze me. I can't even imagine doing something like that (but then I can't even see my toes right now!)

You go girl! (And mucho massages I think!)

  4. Massage is excellent for training. It moves the lymph and toxins that build up in your muscles as you train. Get one, you'll feel so much better.

  5. Sounds like this is a great experience for you! I look forward to reading more about your training, I definitely need the motivation right now to stay active. Cheers!
