This hurts me more than it hurts you Posted on December 12, 20099 Comments

A programming note: I’m going back to word verification on comments for now. I know, I know, it’s a pain in the arse and goes against everything I tell anyone who asks for tips on how to be a blogger. The thing is, the spam comments are driving me up a wall. You haven’t seen them here because I’ve been moderating comments, but even that gets wearisome (not to mention I’ve accidentally rejected a few real comments from my Modern Friends who’ve unfortunately left their comments in the middle of a wave of comments giving me a backhanded compliment before urging me to check out the online Phoenix phone directory.)

I would just let them go, except for 1. I don’t want anyone using my blog for their own commercial promotion unless I say so and 2. This is a blog for Modern Gals and the men who love them. I’m going to assume none of you need to be informed about Viagra and Cialis.

The good news is I’m getting rid of moderation for the time being and after a few weeks I may try removing the word verification to see if the problem is solved. If it isn’t, well, word verification it is. Unless someone has a better solution to getting rid of the spammers.

In the mean time, I beg, beg, BEG of you all to take the extra obnoxious 10 seconds to leave a comment, please and thank you. And as my gift to you for doing so, a dating tips video:

  1. Don't know if it's available through Blogger, but the site where voting for the Mkt Sq Farmer's Mkt took place had something different than word verification. It had random pictures of, say, a dog, flower, carrot, and tree. It asked posters to (in that instance) click on the item that was NOT a plant. Not sure it's any less trouble than word verification, but no more trying to decipher words that are all squished up.

Regardless, I will continue to read – and sometimes comment on – TMG postings!

  2. Hey, you do what you gotta do. I wouldn't want all the spam comments appearing on my blog either. I wonder if your blog specifically has become some sort of spam target, or if this is happening with all Blogger blogs? If it's the latter, I recommend switching to WordPress — I've been happy w/it and it's super easy to import your archives.

OMG, that video is hilarious. "Don't spill red wine on him, because you don't want him to remember you for the wrong reasons." HA!

  3. This video totally made my day. For real. I don't know why I don't follow this to heart. Also, totes understand on the comments. Spam comments make me nuts too

  4. This video is the best thing ever. The lady in the green suit takes the sports theme to an extreme by apparently wearing football pads under her jacket.

  5. I switched to word verification, and it works pretty well.

Sorry you've been getting bombarded with spam. And, no, none of us need Viagra or Cialis. 😉
