A Modern Gal musical mission

A Modern Gal musical mission Posted on May 28, 20088 Comments

Judging by the response to the previous post about music peaking in 1995, not everyone agrees with me on that point. I have clarified my position, at the recommendation of Mickey, as one that claims POPULAR music peaked in 1995.

The Modern Gal admits that one area she fails in is musical taste, something her friends can verify. The thing is, I prefer to be hit over the head with good music rather than have to work hard to find it. I yearn for the days of alternative rock radio, when all the fantastic music was just a radio dial turn away. Nowadays, I have to go searching through the internets and such to find the good stuff. Too much work.

I know, lazy, right? I maintain that I work extra-hard in other areas of my life, including trying to bring you the best MG bloggy content, to make up for my musical laziness.

Which brings me to you, modern friends. Your mission today, should you choose to accept, is to suggest ONE GOOD CURRENT SONG that will absolutely blow me away.

I know your first inclination is going to be to give me a laundry list of fantastic new artists and such, and that’s not what I’m asking for. I’m asking for the CHANGE-YOUR-LIFE-IT’S-SO-GOOD kind of song. Just one. If you can’t limit yourself to one, you’re going to have to find a friend or significant other to suggest the other song. I am purposefully trying to be difficult because I want a cross-section of tastes here.

What I will do after I’ve gotten enough suggestions is download all the songs and burn me a new CD, which will go into the car CD player for me to digest for a week or two. I will then report back to you.

Some hints as to my musical tastes:
1. For songs I’ve liked in the past two years, please revisit this old post.
2. As evidenced by this and the previous post, I obviously miss alternative rock.
3. I like a VARIETY. For example. I LOVE 80s music, especially new wave. But I also love a little bit of hair band. And some 80s rock. And old-school 80s rap. And show tunes. I do not, however, like 80s country music.

P.S. CB, your post on music is duly noted, but please specify which song is your suggestion.

  1. For starts, you can stream This Radio Station. But for the Geico commercials, they’re fabulous.

I can’t believe you only want one song, because I’m having a hard time deciding between what stays and what goes. So hoping that other people will lead you in the direction of more national stuff, I’ll send you to listen to The Felice Brothers website, click on “Frankie’s Gun,” their newest single. Much fun. Just try and not listen to the rest…

  2. i know that I was very vocal about the music scene post 1995, but your request for one song has left me stumped and I am going to have to have some more time to think about it but will get back to you soon, I promise.

  3. I agree with Dustin. This will take some time.

Also, it’s good to know I’m not the only one who still uses CDs.

  4. “Walcot” by Vampire Weekend – it causes me to spontaneously hop around like a human pogo stick. Awesome.

  5. Ok, after much thought and deliberation, I have chosen one. Check out “Gone in the Morning” by Hand Built by Robots. It isn’t my “favorite” song by new artists, but it is one of those summer songs that makes you want to sing, dance, and play as loud as possible while riding around on a summer day with your windows down. Also, I have been known to make people CD’s of up and coming or unknown acts that I particularly like. If this is something that you think you would like, let me know. I would be more than happy to indulge your quest for good current music.

  6. I, too, would recommend Vampire Weekend. And you can throw back to earlier years with some Suzanne Vega.
