The Modern Gal ponders the Olympics

The Modern Gal ponders the Olympics Posted on August 13, 20088 Comments

Ok, after not watching any Olympic games for the first couple of nights, I’ve been planted in front of the TV for the last three, even though I have several other things I really, really need to be doing. Like packing for my minivacation WHICH STARTS TOMORROW NIGHT. No, I’m not excited at all.

As I sit here, my head has swirled with the following questions:

  • Michael Phelps: animal or droid? I seriously doubt he’s human.
  • Why are the hand flippy hand motions necessary in the floor exercises of gymnatics?
  • Why are the Olympics so addicting? I am neither a very patriotic person nor someone who would spend any time watching synchronized diving on television normally.
  • Why can’t the American gals stay in bounds?
  • Why isn’t Bela Karoyli coaching gymnastics? I sure as hell can’t understand what he’s saying as a commentator.
  • How much did China pay the Olympic committee to squeeze that 12 year old in?
  • Just how cranky will I be tomorrow for yet another night short on the sleep?

P.S. I love the running dialogue that’s going on amongst Twitter friends regarding Olympics.

  1. I’m wondering if Bela has been banned, maybe b/c of some past behavior?

And I totally agree with you about the American girls not being able to stay in bounds. I mean, I can MAYBE see how some of the taller girls might have trouble (’cause I’d imagine that they go further when they flip), but even lil’ Shawn went out last night. WTF? You’d think it was their first time doing those routines, or something.

  2. Michael Phelps is a beast.
Obsessed with swimming, both guys and girls. Obsessed.
Yesterday they had a call-in vote on the radio about the hottest Olympian. You better beleive I cast my vote – Aaron Peirsol. I even got on-air đŸ™‚

    HAPPY VACATION

  3. I have always loved watching the Olympics. My favorite, besides the swimming, are the obscure sports. I am enamored with the idea that someone devotes their life to learning a sport that no one has ever heard of.

  4. I am right there with you. And thanks to Bela the question about the age of the Chinese girl gymnasts are back in question. Lets do some real testing this time instead of going on passports.

  5. i have been missing my beauty sleep due to over watching the games. im addicted, i can’t help it!

  6. My boyfriend has a theory that the Chinese shrank the parameters of the floor for the floor routines, and the Americans are stepping out of bounds because they haven’t realized it’s not regulation size. Or something.

Whatever, some of those Chinese gymnasts cannot be more than 12. Cheating! But I guess they still got a gold medal, so yay for 12-year-olds.

  7. I cannot wait for the Olympics to be over just so I can get a good night’s sleep again. It really has been ridiculous but who can miss the gymnastics final or the all-around or the… By the way I got your CD and LOVE IT!
